     John Hughes was born circa November 1848.1 He was the son of Thomas M Hughes and Nancy A Bird.1

On 3 September 1850 John Hughes was enumerated in the household of Thomas M Hughes on the 1850 U. S. census for 85th District, Union County, Georgia as John Hughs, 10/12 years old, birthplace of Georgia. Also enumerated in the household were Nancy A Bird, William C. Hughes, Francis Hughes, Louisa Hughes, Eleanor C Hughes, Jane Hughes, Rosetta Hughes, Thomas Hughes and Sarah Elizabeth Hughes.1

On 18 June 1860 John Hughes was enumerated in the household of Thomas M Hughes on the 1860 U. S. census for Blairsville Ga Post Office, Blairsville, Union County, Georgia as John Hughes, 11 years old. Attended school within the year. Also enumerated in the household were Nancy A Bird, William C. Hughes, Jane Hughes, Rosetta Hughes, Thomas Hughes, Sarah Elizabeth Hughes, Andrew P Hughes and Calley Hughes.2 As of 1870, John Hughes was also known as John W Hughes.3

On 7 June 1870 John Hughes was enumerated in the household of Thomas M Hughes on the 1870 U. S. census for Blairsville Post Office, Subdivision 126, Union County, Georgia as John W Hughes, 20 years old, birthplace of Georgia, occupation of Farm Laborer. Attended school within the year. Also enumerated in the household were Nancy A Bird, Sarah Elizabeth Hughes, Andrew P Hughes, Calley Hughes and Samuel Hughes.3
