Robert Cantrell was born circa 1836 at Tennessee.1 He was the son of Gabriel Cantrell and Nancy Smith.1
On 8 October 1850 Robert Cantrell was enumerated in the household of Nancy Smith on the 1850 U. S. census for the 23 Subdivision, McMinn County, Tennessee as Robert Cantrell, 14 years old, birthplace of Tennessee. Attended school within the year. Also enumerated in the household were Larkin Cantrell, William Cantrell, Thomas Cantrell, James Cantrell, Alexander Cantrell, Felix Cantrell, Mary Ann Elizabeth Cantrell, Sarah Cantrell, Hesekiah Cantrell, Joseph Pealin Cantrell and David Cantrell.1
