James Cantrell was born circa 1835 at Tennessee.1 He was the son of Gabriel Cantrell and Nancy Smith.1
On 8 October 1850 James Cantrell was enumerated in the household of Nancy Smith on the 1850 U. S. census for the 23 Subdivision, McMinn County, Tennessee as James Cantrell, 15 years old, birthplace of Tennessee, occupation of Farmer. Also enumerated in the household were Larkin Cantrell, William Cantrell, Thomas Cantrell, Robert Cantrell, Alexander Cantrell, Felix Cantrell, Mary Ann Elizabeth Cantrell, Sarah Cantrell, Hesekiah Cantrell, Joseph Pealin Cantrell and David Cantrell.1
