David Cantrell was born circa 1849 at Tennessee.1 He was the son of Gabriel Cantrell and Nancy Smith.1
On 8 October 1850 David Cantrell was enumerated in the household of Nancy Smith on the 1850 U. S. census for the 23 Subdivision, McMinn County, Tennessee as Benjamin Cantrell, 1 years old, birthplace of Tennessee. Also enumerated in the household were Larkin Cantrell, William Cantrell, Thomas Cantrell, James Cantrell, Robert Cantrell, Alexander Cantrell, Felix Cantrell, Mary Ann Elizabeth Cantrell, Sarah Cantrell, Hesekiah Cantrell and Joseph Pealin Cantrell.2
On 16 August 1860 David Cantrell was enumerated in the household of Nancy Smith on the 1860 U. S. census for Hazelwood Post Office, Union Township, Webster County, Missouri as David Cantrell, 11 years old, birthplace of Tennessee. Attended school within the year. Also enumerated in the household were Alexander Cantrell, Felix Cantrell, Mary Ann Elizabeth Cantrell, Sarah Cantrell, Hesekiah Cantrell, Joseph Pealin Cantrell and Sarah E Cantrell.3
On 19 July 1870 David Cantrell was enumerated in the household of Nancy Smith on the 1870 U. S. census for Hazelwood Post Office, Hazelwood Township, Webster County, Missouri as David Cantrill, 21 years old, birthplace of Tennessee, occupation of Farmer, value of personal property $100. Could not read. Could not write. Enumerated as 21 Year or older male citizen. Also enumerated in the household were Joseph Pealin Cantrell and Sarah Caroline Cantrell.1
