     James Black was born circa 1840 at Indiana.1 He was the son of Thomas Black and Mary Elizabeth Crow.1

On 7 August 1850 James Black was enumerated in the household of Thomas Black on the 1850 U. S. census for Peru Township, Miami County, Indiana as James Black, 10 years old, birthplace of Indiana. Attended school within the year. Also enumerated in the household were Hannah Schuler, John Black, Palmer Adsit Black, Morton S Black, Asa Black, William Black, Mary Ann Black, Schuler Black, Scudder Black, Lucy Johnson and Emeline Johnson.1

On 19 June 1860 James Black was enumerated in the household of Thomas Black on the 1860 U. S. census for Peru Post Office, Peru Township, Miami County, Indiana as James Black, 21 years old, birthplace of Indiana, occupation of Shoemaker. Also enumerated in the household were Hannah Schuler, Palmer Adsit Black, Morton S Black, Asa Black, William Black, Mary Ann Black, Schuler Black, Scudder Black, Elwood Black and Alzina Black.2
