John Gerhart was born circa 1848 at Ohio.1 He was the son of Jacob Gerhart and Maria Catherine Seyler.1
On 4 September 1850 John Gerhart was enumerated in the household of Jacob Gerhart on the 1850 U. S. census for District No 137 Salem Township, Washington County, Ohio as John Gerhart, 2 years old, birthplace of Ohio. Also enumerated in the household were Maria Catherine Seyler, Catherine Gerhart, Daniel Gerhart, Jacob Gerhart, Adam Seyler and Caroline Seyler.1
On 2 August 1860 John Gerhart was enumerated in the household of Jacob Gerhart on the 1860 U. S. census for Lowell Post Office, Salem Township, Washington County, Ohio as John Gerhard, 12 years old, birthplace of Ohio. Attended school within the year. Also enumerated in the household were Maria Catherine Seyler, Catherine Gerhart, Daniel Gerhart, Maria Gerhart, Rosina Gerhart and Adam Gerhart.2
