     Hilley Dennis was born in 1845 at Hickory County, Missouri.1 He was the son of Jonathan Dennis and Mary Barnett.1

On 21 September 1850 Hilley Dennis was enumerated in the household of Jonathan Dennis on the 1850 U. S. census for District No 37, Hickory County, Missouri as Hilley Dennis, 5 years old, birthplace of Missouri. Also enumerated in the household were Mary Barnett, Elcana Blevins Dennis, Barnett H Dennis, Nellie Hall Dennis, William Nathan Dennis, Elizabeth Dennis and Edde Dennis.2

Hilley Dennis married Angeline Tobey on 16 August 1863 at Johnson County, Texas.1,3 Hilley Dennis was on the Johnson County, Texas list of Indigent Confederate Families as Hilly Dennis in Confederate Service with 1 dependent on 17 March 1864.4
